Chapter Twenty-Nine

By Thursday, the day of the cross country meet, Jen was missing Luke like crazy. She missed his company, his smile, his laughter. The way he teased her. The way he watched her walk. The way his eyes lit up when she walked into a room. The way he listened to everything she had to say like it was the most important thing anybody ever told him. Mostly she missed feeling his arms around her, his sweet kisses. Her heart ached. How had she gotten so attached to him in such a short period of time? After making love with him, it was even worse. She had felt a special bond with him that she hadn’t felt in…maybe forever. Too bad it hadn’t lasted longer.

It had felt wonderful having him in the house all the time – just right downstairs if she wanted to talk, and she was available for him if he needed anything, even just to kill a spider. Just knowing he was there made her feel better. Now it was such an empty place without him. She used to go check on him first thing in the morning, have lunch with him, and then check on him again after she closed the shop and they would talk about supper. She even missed him arguing with her. He wouldn’t even talk to her now. He was deeply hurt and she wasn’t sure how to fix it. She’d tried texting him again Monday night, but he didn’t answer. This was getting ridiculous. They were adults and they should be able to talk this out.

She hoped to be able to talk to him at the cross country meet today. She closed up the shop early so she could drive over to the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. Luke wouldn’t answer her text or phone call about whether he needed a ride, so she drove by herself. Maybe his mother and Greg would take him.

She looked forward to seeing Cassie, too. She’d gotten used to seeing her most weekdays after school since Luke had traveled so much, and then for the past month, she’d been there every day since Luke’s accident. With school having started on Tuesday, Jen was alone through the day and then only had Logan at night when he got out of football practice. She didn’t need to have someone around her all the time, but after having a houseful for so long, it felt different. Lonely.

She arrived at the Sportsplex, parked her Mini in the parking lot, and found the area where the starting line would be, close to a big man-made lake with a spraying fountain.

Her heart leapt when she saw Luke. He was standing – without crutches – with his mom and Greg under a tall oak tree. She walked over to them.

“Hey,” she said when she was close enough to get Luke’s attention. She smiled tentatively. He was wearing a gray t-shirt, a matching ball cap on his head, dark blue and gray Bermuda shorts, and one black flip-flop.
